What is Legal Entity Identifier (LEI)?
A Legal Entity Identifier is a 20-character unique code for legal entities. This international code is also known as LEI number, LEI or LEI code. For companies, organzations, associations, funds and other legal entities that make transactions in European transactional markets a LEI number is mandatory, All LEI numbers are alpha-numeric and based on the ISO 17442 standard. With the use of Legal Entity Identifiers relevant authorities are able to identify different parties in a transaction.
The requirement of Legal Entity Identifier comes from EU directives such as MiFIR, MIFID II and EMIR. The requirement came into place in 2018 with the aim to make a more transparent and stable global financial market.
